Installing the ITP/MDK Repository Server

This chapter describes a clean installation, upgrades will be described in chapter Upgrading. Start the ITP/MDK Repository Server setup executable. During the installation you will be asked:

• A name for the ITP/MDK Repository Server installation. This is necessary to make it possible to install multiple servers on the same computer.
• Whether or not Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 should be installed. This option will only be offered if no default instance of Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 exists on the system. The default instance name of Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 is SQLEXPRESS. If you select this option a Data Source Name will be created automatically and the next question will not be asked.

  Note

  The ITP/MDK Repository Server uses a central database to store all its documents and settings. It uses ODBC to connect to this database. The ITP/MDK Repository Server installer provides the possibility to install Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005. An installation of Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 requires Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 and Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 is a limited version of Microsoft SQL/Server. It is highly recommended to only use it for initial setups and tryouts.

• To enter the Data Source Name that will be used to connect to the database.
  Optionally, you can also enter the user and the password. The password will be stored in the configuration file (itprep.ini), where it will be encrypted the first time a connection with the database is made.

Note

The password is not only encrypted, the non-encrypted password is also replaced by the encrypted version in the configuration file.

Note

During installation the database referred to by the Data Source Name will be populated. If the Data Source Name refers to an existing Repository database, the data will be converted to the new version. This is an irreversible process. Refer to Database Compatibility for more information.

• To provide a TCP/IP port number that the clients will use to connect to the ITP/MDK Repository Server. This port number must not be in use on this computer.

  Note

  This port number, together with the server name or server IP address must be used during ITP/MDK Repository Client installation.

• To specify ITP/MDK Repository Server Service Account under which the ITP/MDK Repository service will run. The Local System Account is the default account. For special cases, e.g., using SQL Server Integrated Authentication, you can also use any other Windows User Account which has administrator rights. This possibility is only offered in a clean installation in Microsoft Windows 2003 and up.
• To select a destination folder in which to install the ITP/MDK Repository Server.
• To enter the name of the Program Manager Group of the Microsoft Windows Start menu to which the icons for the ITP/MDK Repository Server will be added.

At the end of the installation of the ITP/MDK Repository Server the database will be populated. This is done by running a database configuration program (cvc.exe). This program connects to the installed ITP/MDK Repository Server using the host name and port provided during installation. If this program fails, refer to Database configuration program failure for directions how to complete the installation manually.
